Workshop on Heritage Listing & Documentation Conducted by Centre for Cultural Knowledge System (CCKS), SPA- Bhopal headed by Dr. Vishakha Kawathekar date 21 to 23 October’16 at MIDAS Architecture College
Heritage is a priceless possession of any society. Cherishing our own heritage is essential to preserve the culture over eons. Heritage exists around us at any given point of time in a very subtle way. Two major ways we identify heritage is through tangible heritage in the form of buildings and intangible heritage in the form of custom and practice. There is no better place than an architecture school to instill the identification and preservation of heritage.
As an awareness and skill development process, MIDAS Architecture College and SPA Bhopal (School of Planning and Architecture Bhopal) had jointly conducted “Workshop on Heritage Listing and Documentation” in partnership with CCKS (Center for Culture and Knowledge Systems) which is a method developed towards understanding the existing heritage in the paradigm of people, place and time leading to holistic understanding and identifying the heritage of the place.
The purpose of the workshop is to identify, list and document an existing heritage buildings including the surroundings and its cultural nature. A strict conservation methodology has to be followed for the above mentioned exercise. The three day workshop conducted at MIDAS was packed with lectures, site visits and an immersive studio work.
The workshop was headed by Dr. Vishakha Kawathekar (Director, CCKS) – has more than 14 years of experience in conservation, worked on WMF (World Monument Fund) projects, has been actively engaging in ASI, INTACH projects and other conservation activities. Other team members include of Ar.Balaji V, Ar.Devakumar Thenchery, Ar.Apoorva Bhargava and other members of CCKS.
At the end of the workshop students participated had completed the documentation of “Our Lady of Angels Church” Pondicherry as intended. They have expressed their satisfaction on the knowledge gained during the three days. We are looking forward to similar workshops in the future.
